Paradise turns into rank

For the past two weeks, taxi drivers have been parking their vehicles on a vacant plot of land in Jenkyn Street, Paradise.

For the past two weeks, taxi drivers have been parking their vehicles on a vacant plot of land in Jenkyn Street, Paradise.

“I feel uneasy using the road. It feels like the taxi drivers are watching you and your children. I have actually started using another route to get home,” claimed a resident living in the area.

Although, residents feel uneasy about the presence of the taxis, there have been apparently no criminal incidents linked to the taxi drivers.

“I have had no issues with the taxi drivers, in fact, one of them actually identified a burglar who was in Paradise and notified me immediately,” explained Mark Jacobs from Paradise Neighbourhood Watch.

Mr Jacobs said the taxi drivers had been notified they were not allowed in the suburb itself.

“If they try, I will notify the police and traffic department. They have been very complacent and if I ask them to turn the music down in their vehicles, they do it,” he said.

A taxi driver, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed taxi drivers were not using the grounds as a make-shift rank. “We simply park here to wash our vehicles.”

Councillor for Ward 4, Bertie Meiring, undertook to investigate the matter.

“I will look into it and refer it to the relevant authorities, as it is my mission to make Paradise an area worth living in.”
