EXCO Councilor Revd. Sithembiso Mataba in kwaNongoma is currently working on getting the Zululand District Municipality and the COGTA Disaster Relief Team to intervene urgently and provide help to people who have been left homeless by the heavy storm over the weekend in the area.

“The long awaited March rains have started. As much as we welcome the rains, it is accompanied by strong winds that destroy homes and leaves people without shelter. People in Nongoma and areas around Zululand felt the devastating effects of the storm that left people homeless,” said Mataba.

“Many residents of ward 12 reported their plight to their councilor, Mrs PD Ndlovu Zulu. According to current information 6 families lost their houses in the Ndlavini Mayeni area, 5 families in the Nzamangamandla area, 3 families in Sizinda, 3 in KwaMakhehla, 3 kwaNgwabi and 1 in Manhlanhla. These families are in desperate need of assistance”, Cllr Mataba went on.

“The IFP sympathizes with the residents who have suffered as a result of this storm. It is very painful to lose your shelter and the belongings that you worked so hard for. The Human Settlements Department should step in immediately to provide temporary shelter for people who have suffered in such disasters until such time that permanent houses are built for them”, concluded Cllr Mataba.
