Catching fish as well as crooks

The last angling competition he attended was from September 3 to 9 when he represented the SAPS

Lieutenant Colonel ZS Langa isn’t only passionate about fighting crime, but also about casting a fishing line into deep waters and hoping he catches a “whopper”.

With his great smile and humble personality, this Ladysmith police officer enjoys being in the outdoors with his family and other anglers when he is off-duty and doesn’t have to worry about the bad guys.

Lt Col Langa is a professional angler who is part of KZN Angling and the Police Angling Club.

He started fishing at a young age when he used to live next to the river. Together with his brothers and friends, they would fish using sticks. This was also a method of survival for the family.

Lt Col Langa is happily married and has three handsome sons. As said above, when he is off-duty, he enjoys taking his family out to the dam to fish.

He has won many angling competitions over the years and is still striving to win more. He uses Rocket or Bulletproof rods, which are 12 and 13ft long, and the only reels he uses are Shemanoo. “It is a very expensive reel, but I don’t care about the price because I enjoy this sport so much.”

Lt Col Langa uses flavoured mealie floaties as bait.

Not only that, but this crime-buster can throw an amazing 120m when he casts in!

A Ladysmith Gazettte journalist caught up with him recently and asked what his other hobbies are, to which he replied that he enjoys athletics, watching soccer and spending time with his family.

Lt Col Langa’s favourite fish to catch is a Carp. Not only does he enjoy the taste of it, but he says it’s a clean fish.

The last angling competition he attended was from September 3 to 9 when he represented the SAPS. He explained that the competition was very tough, as there were top-class anglers from all over the country participating.

“My message to everyone is to do what you love and be the best at it,” smiles this courageous cop with a taste for Carp.
