Laying a solid foundation for a competitive round

Much like the fairy tale, some rounds of golf were built solidly out of brick and mortar which the wolf was very interested in

There were some notable achievements from two of our golfers over the last two weeks, which saw Sipho Hlongwa in action at Kloof Country Club playing in the club ‘Champion of Champions’ and Nora Simpson playing in the Sanlam Cansa Regional finals in Pietermaritzburg.

Sipho unfortunately did not play particularly well on the Saturday, but made up for it on Sunday and managed to end up in the top half of a field of 50-plus club champions.

Nora, on the other hand – having had her own personal battle with cancer and survived – had a rather slow start at the Sanlam Challenge. As the round progressed, Nora showed that with determination, as well as courage, anything can be achieved and with her true fighting spirit coming to the fore, the strong field started to wilt under the pressure she was applying. These attributes displayed by Nora ensured that she emerged victorious and won the ‘C’ Division, which qualifies her to play in the Sanlam Cansa National Championships to be held at Sun City in October.

Well done to both Nora and Sipho for being such worthy champions. We at the club are very proud of you both.

The golf course was under construction on Saturday, with the spring treatment having been started during the week for the EC Bozza Construction monthly mug. On a day that saw the cold front close in and a little rain fall, 40-odd golfers took to Bozza’s building site to lay a solid foundation for a competitive (much like his quotes) round of golf.

Much like the fairy tale, some rounds of golf were built solidly out of brick and mortar which the wolf was very interested in, some out of a flexible straw that kept the wolf semi-interested, while the rest were actually built so far out in the sticks that the wolf didn’t even bother to go there.

Of course, Boz the Builder had no knowledge of such developments, as he was too busy repairing his own round, as can be seen from the course. There were, as always, some golfers just too smart for the wolf…

In the ‘A’ Division, we saw Vernon Naidoo, with a net 66, blow away Patrick Mbatha to win by one shot. It is great to see Patrick back on the course so soon after his near fatal attack and in the prizes.

The ‘B’ Division was won by Bransby Niemach, who huffed and puffed his way to a net 66, beating Neal Singh into second place with a 68 nett.

The IPS winner was Gerald Boardman, who moved to a New Den and cleaned up with a polished round of 40 points, followed closely by Charles Elworthy on 39 points.

The best gross went to ‘leader of the pack’ Sipho Hlongwa, who won with a 70 gross. The sucker was won by Marcel “hungry like the wolf” Meyer, who had a howler of a day.

A litter of nine players won the two-club, which (simply red) means the money was too little to mention. The ‘nearest the pins’ winners were Andrea Sirchia, Dave Salmond, Corné Stevens and Gia Bozza on the 3rd, 8th 11th and 12th respectively. The ‘longest drive’ went to Philip “the wolfman” Boardman.

Thanks to Enrico for his sponsorship and a very well done to all the winners.

There are a few big golf days coming up, so please get your names on the lists early. There are still a few openings available to sponsor, so should you or your company or organisation be interested, please contact the club, who will put you in touch with the right people. See you on the fairways and greens.
