Beware of SMS loan scams

Police are appealing to the public to steer clear of these types of SMS offers; they are scams

Ladysmith detectives are investigating a case of theft under false pretences.

A case was recently opened after a woman was scammed out of R3000.

She received an SMS offering her a loan of R5000 and upon answering the message, she was told to deposit a sum of R3000 into a specific bank account before the loan could be granted.

The woman did as instructed and needless to say, she has not heard from the person who offered her the loan again.

Nor has she received her R5000 loan.

Police are appealing to the public to steer clear of these types of SMS offers, since they are scams.

No one needs to pay up-front for a loan. Loans should be applied for at a reputable financial institution.
