Sasko ‘lightens’ up

Following a full year of strikes and violent outbreaks, the Sasko community’s demands for electricity have been heard.

Following a full year of strikes and violent outbreaks, the Sasko community’s demands for electricity have been heard.
After long months of working and intermittenly, municipal workers have finished putting in electricity meters at the first section of Bhekuzulu Extension 16 last month.
Last year, the people of Sasko demanded answers from the mayor as to why their houses were not electrified in the first place.
They resorted to blocking all roads leading into Vryheid with burning tyres in the early hours of the morning as part of their protest.
“We are very happy to have finally received the electricity as having to buy fresh food everyday because, of not having a fridge, is very expensive,” said Themba Mtshali, who lives in one of these low cost houses.
Although many are happy about this, some residents were not impressed and went on to say that the municipality was doing all this with the coming elections in mind.
“Were it not for the coming municipal elections, they wouldn’t have bothered to do this for us,” said one resident who asked not to be named.
The municipality seems to be set on meeting the demands that were brought forward by the Sasko community, as there are already people working on digging up the storm-water system for the area.
