Political killings: Commission of Inquiry to be set up

While not focused only on ANC-on-ANC violence, 13 dead ANC members makes it a big part of the Inquiry

When people are killed in home invasions, drive-by-shooting or ambushes, the first thing residents used to ask was, “Which taxi faction killed who?” This is no longer the case, as now people ask, “Was it taxi violence or a political killing?”

The fact that two ANC ward candidates have been shot in the Emnambithi/Ladysmith area in less than two weeks is horrifying. Add to this the killing of candidates in Newcastle and the entire Northern KZN region seems to have erupted into an ANC-on-ANC war zone. The fact that women candidates have been targeted has also shocked many hardened political activists.

Altogether 13 politically linked killings have taken place, or to quote KZN Premier Willies Mchunu: “Reports this week indicated that 13 ANC members had been murdered in KwaZulu-Natal since March.”

Mchunu announced that a Commission of Inquiry would be set up, but that it would be unlikely it would be operational before the elections, as its terms of reference needed to be properly set up.

It would also look at political attacks involving other parties as well.

“I met with Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and we both agreed that there is a need for this Commission of Inquiry. In addition, the minister has appointed a special task team to investigate all political related murders,” added Mchunu. See full story HERE

1000s of people attended the funeral of ANC ward candidate Comrade Khanyisile Ngobese-Sibisi, which was held at the Indoor Sports Complex on Saturday.

She was shot dead by unknown attackers on Monday, July 18 (Nelson Mandela Day). This was the second attack on a ANC ward candidate in Ladysmith.
