Eric brings the smackdown

Eric would like to take his wrestling career to new heights and encourages other youngsters to take up wrestling in a heartbeat

Eric de Wet has proved anything is possible through hard work and dedication.

On August 26, Eric will be competing at the KwaZulu-Natal Championships to be held at Arbor Park Sports Centre.

“I am really excited about it and I am aiming for gold and to keep my club’s name high,” he enthused.

The 14-year-old Eric is no stranger to competitive wrestling.

He participated in several wrestling tournaments and won medals to prove his worth on the mat.

“I also went to Germany last year to represent KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa, and I will be touring Germany again next year. I am very excited about going, as you do not get opportunities like this often, so you have to grab them when you do.”

Eric was also included in the KZN Elite Wrestling team last year.

To be part of the the KZN Elite Team, members have to excel in the sport, attend all necessary tournaments and practice sessions, and show substantial potential and discipline.

Furthermore, members chosen were not automatically guaranteed a spot in the team in the following year. Eric has now been included in the team for two consecutive years.

Eric would like to take his wrestling career to new heights and encourages other youngsters to take up wrestling in a heartbeat.

“I have a dream to compete at the Olympics. I enjoy the sport. It improves your concentration, as you have to think what you need to do and what your opponent is going to do,” he said

“It does not matter where you come from, or what problems you have, it teaches you a lot.”
