A walk of faith

Hindu devotees took a walk of faith last Friday evening, when they participated in the annual fire-walking ceremony.

Shanti Nivas Ashram hosted the auspicious ceremony as a means to pay homage to the Divine Mother Marriaman, as well as recognising the sacred power of women.

Guru Sarverson Naidoo said the ceremony derived from two historical occurrences, the most popular when the Divine Mother came to earth in people’s time of need.

“There was a drought and people were suffering from diseases such as pox. During this time, villagers called on the Divine Mother and when she came, she helped them.”

To show their thankfulness and devotion, the fire-walking ceremony was created, as it displayed devotees’ faith, walking through the fire without being consumed.

Before devotees crossed the fiery coals, they prayed in preparation of the walk.

With a rich spiritual significance, the night was one of enlightenment and fellowship.
