VRYHEID residents have been talking about it for years. They’re tired of big trucks lumbering through town and wrenching the roads apart. They are tired of them ignoring the weight limit restrictions. But there has always been the excuse – the drivers and vehicles need food and fuel.

That could all end soon.

Vryheid Junction Convenience Centre is the name of the new “Ultra City”/”Truck Stop” which is taking shape just out of town on the Vryheid/Dundee road. It is located at the intersection with the Paulpietersburg/Ulundi bypass, thus catering for traffic from north-south and east-west.

The weather will probably determine whether or not the facility will be open in time for the December holidays and the resultant traffic.

If it is open, motorists and truckers will have access to Engen fuel, a new Wimpy, Engen Quik Shop and Corner Bakery, ATMs of the major banks, a “tuisnywerheid padstall”, a huge parking area, and truckers can get a shower.

Currently the site is being levelled with layers which are compacted to provide a solid surface for the final paving layer. Landscaping will follow plus the erection of signage and other final touches to make the facility look as welcoming as possible.

And then, the truck will have no excuse.
