Beware of municipal ‘debit order’ scam

The con-artist says he is one of a team assisting consumers to sign debit orders, making it easier for the consumer

Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality would like to warn consumers of a scam that is apparently targeting the community.

Residents have come forward stating that they were contacted by a gentleman telling them that Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality and uThukela District Municipality consumer accounts were being combined.

The con-artist says he is one of a team assisting consumers to sign debit orders, making it easier for the consumer. He then asks to make an appointment so that you can sign a debit order.

One community member, while on the phone with this man, questioned how a person could sign a debit order if she did not consume the same amount of water and electricity every month. After a few more questions from the community member, the man cut the call.

The local municipality would like to warn the community against this criminal activity. At no time has the municipality gone into such agreements and there is no representative being sent out to organise debit orders.

If you receive a call like this, be sure not to give any personal information to the caller.
