Spectre on a ghostly hunt

Using modern technology and utter conviction in their mission, three enterprising Newcastillians known collectively as Spectre, hope to unearth answers about paranormal activity.

The truth is out there.

Using modern technology and utter conviction in their mission, three enterprising Newcastillians known collectively as Spectre, hope to unearth answers about paranormal activity.

“We are not into the occult, we just seek the truth on life after death,” explained leader, Werner Wessels.

In a quest to confirm or bust rumours of ghostly activity at locations around Newcastle, Werner, his wife Carla and friend Ewald Schoeman have visited many iconic locales.

One such location, where the team recorded high activity, was Fort Amiel.

Last Friday, Spectre set up their Electronic Magnetic Field (EMF) detector, grabbed a pair of cameras and visited a local establishment to investigate rumours of unusual activity.

Before attempting to make contact, the team have a few cardinal rules.

“As you enter a site, cleanse your thoughts. Any entity will connect with you on an electrical level.”

Spectre said it was important to remain calm spiritually, relying only on EMF readings, photographs and Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) to prove or disprove theories.

Werner generally asks questions, asking spirits to communicate with the EVP.

Spectre members said it was most important to not provoke a possible entity, but to respect it as a person.

“We don’t use pagan methods like incense or crystals, or any black magic. We are strictly professional; if there is something, we will say so.”

Initial inspection of the bottom floor of the establishment yielded a few mid-level energy readings, noting two rooms exhibited unusual spikes.

Upstairs, things took a turn for the unexpected.

Apart from a few incidences of strange orbs appearing on photographs, Werner began to pick up high energy readings in a specific room, and entered.

“This spot is right above the room we picked up activity on the lower level. What are the chances?”

A sense of sorrow seemed to weigh down on the team, almost as if gravity had increased, and camera equipment began to malfunction.

Insistent on continuing, Werner asked many questions.

Initial inquiries as to the gender of the entity and its purpose in the room manifested mid-level energy spikes, with the frequency of orbs and sounds rising eerily.

“Am I disturbing you? Do you want us to leave?”

Suddenly, a massive energy surge at close range had the team spooked, seconds before Werner’s EVP and EMF metering device ceased functioning.

Only once he had exited the room, could the device reboot.

“I would say it was quite successful. I felt an urgency in one area and a heavy sadness in the other. “

The team will now conduct investigations on their recorded data.

Werner admitted paranormal studies remained a grey area, with numerous sceptics always ready to explain away strange occurrences.

“We beg to differ.”

He added the beauty of Spectre’s mission was being able to uncover figurative gold each time it struck lucky with positive results.

“You can’t fake goose bumps,” he said with a smile.
