Alfred Street rehabilitation project stumbles

Contractors stopped work on the road months back, sparking questions as to whether to project was complete

When the rehabilitation of Alfred Street commenced in March 2015, residents were glad that this part of town would receive a makeover.
However, more than two years later, not much has changed.

There are fewer bumps in the road but otherwise, the road looks nothing like the ‘new’ road should. With fading road markings, incomplete pavements and gutters, oil-stained surfaces and blatant disregard for the new parking specifications, the rehabilitated Alfred Street disappoints.

Contractors stopped work on the road months back, sparking questions as to whether to project was complete. Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality said it was not and they were awaiting the official handover from the contractors.

Months later and the state of the road seems like it has been placed on the back burner. The Estcourt News queried again from the local municipality about the status of this project, which involves one of the busier streets in the central business district.

Communications Manager Sphelele Zikalala said that this Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funded project was approved and handed over in 2015.

She added that during the construction phase, leaking water pipes underneath the road surface posed a challenge.

Uthukela District Municipality promised to work on the pipes however, the project was completed without the modification,” she added.
Ms Zikalala gave no indication as to how this challenge would be addressed or when measures would be taken.
