FIRE SEASON: top winter safety tips

Calling it the role of each resident to join efforts to fight unwanted fires, the Fire Service released these safety tips.

The sheer damage caused by winter fires is cause for concern.

Newcastle Fire Service made this statement in relation to the rising number of households and agricultural land destroyed in the so-called fire season.

“It is a known fact fires can never be prevented, since it is a crucial element in preserving nature,” sources stated.

However, the losses caused by fires can be prevented.

Calling it the role of each resident to join efforts to fight unwanted fires, the Fire Service released the following safety tips:

  • Remember that fires always start small
  • Fires need the trinity of oxygen, a spark or ignition and fuel to exist – removing any of these three elements kills the fire
  • Avoid unnecessary open flames
  • Keep properties free of overgrown and dry vegetation
  • Make firebreaks around farm or rural properties – check the Fire Danger Index with the Fire Protection Association office or the Fire Department before lighting a firebreak
  • Avoid gathering combustibles in unprotected area
  • Do not take a chance – open fires on windy days are dangerous
  • Keep matches and fuel away from children
  • Extinguish the fire after a braai
  • Report all fires you can see, regardless of the size
  • Switch off the heater and stoves when you leave the house or go to bed
  • Do not place heaters close to bed linen, curtains or other material which burns easily
  • Avoid overloading electrical plug sockets
  • Do not leave children alone in the house with the heater or stove on
  • Bad habits which can cause harm to people, property or the environment should be avoided
  • Report all fires to 034 312 1222
