Woman dies in hit and run

The flashing lights of emergency vehicles broke the night sky. Debris from a motorcycle lay scattered on the tarmac in Drakensberg Drive. A lifeless body marked the tragic circumstances of the scene.

A woman was killed in a hit and run on Drakensberg Drive on Tuesday night, April 14, shortly after 6pm.

According to sources, the woman driving a motorcycle was allegedly hit by a white Jeep. Despite the best efforts of emergency personnel to save her life, she died on scene.

The driver of the Jeep fled the scene, but he was caught shortly afterwards due to the vigilance of a tow truck driver.

Wishing to remain anonymous, the tow truck driver said he had been the first person on the scene and saw both the driver and his vehicle.

“I was therefore able to identify him and when he was spotted in Kirkland Street, I rushed through with police,” he said.

Captain Shooz Magudulela, SAPS spokesperson, said the man was charged with culpable homicide.

Currently, the SAPS are looking for a witness who could shed further light on the matter.

Allegedly, there was a man on the scene who had witnessed the incident, but left the scene without giving a statement to the police.
