Rocky road to centenary celebration

The company's management say that they are disappointed by the municipality's lack of commitment

Plans for a memorable centenary celebration are underway at Eskort Limited. The company, which sells products that Estcourt is probably most synonymous for, is marking 100 years and they have an array of social responsibility projects and anniversary celebrations planned.

However, the road to the centenary celebration planning is a rocky one, literally ravaged by potholes and dug-up portions of road.

The company’s management has been trying in vain since last year September to engage Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality to repair the damaged road on the side entrance to the factory, ever since it became evident that the lives of pedestrians and motorists were at risk as one dodges potholes.

Since then, letters, appointments, telephone calls and meetings have produced no positive results.

“We were told since September 2016 that the municipality would look into it. Before Christmas, we were promised by the Director from the Civil Department that the road would be repaired within three of four days. Last Tuesday we went to the municipality again for a meeting with the Acting Municipal Manager but were not successful,” explained Eskort Limited General Manager Wynand Nel.

He added that the company is hosting cyclists and the team from the Durban-Johannesburg Commemorative Rally (DJ Rally) on March 10 and are now desperate to have the road repaired. The cyclists will be entering the factory via this road.
“If the municipality does not have the resources, we will repair the road, if they give us the go-ahead but we must be compensated for it,” said Mr Nel.

The company’s management say that they are disappointed by the municipality’s lack of commitment.

“The service delivery is shocking. With the previous council, we had some interaction, now we have nothing. We want to build a relationship, we want to speak,” concluded Mr Nel.

These concerns have been sent to the local municipality.
