Frustrated crowd demand food for livestock

Angry and frustrated, the huge crowd waited hours for help

People have been crowded around Farmsave in Albert Street since this morning, waiting for food for their livestock.

Angry and frustrated, the huge crowd has been waiting hours for help and until now, their wait has been in vain. The gathering outside Farmsave is as a result of an arrangement made by the Department of Agriculture to provide food for people who have livestock, and a JoJo tank to people with a certificate to keep livestock.

An elderly man told the Ladysmith Gazette that he has been waiting at Farmsave from 2am this morning and is still seeking help. Councillor BC Majola was also at the scene, trying to help the frustrated people.

IFP Councillor Abbas Warasally commented, “It is disappointing of the Minister of Agriculture to set up an arrangement like this and not meet the people’s needs. I appeal to the Minister to review this situation and help the people who have come forward.”

In a quick interview with the owner of Farmsave, Dr Hylton Lee, he said that, “Farmsave is here to help the people of the community, but we have to work side-by-side with the Department of Agriculture.”

Over 2000 people were standing on both sides of the road at Afgri in Lyell Street this morning due to the same problem.

Bergville Farmsave was closed this morning for the same reason. An angry crowd demanded food for their livestock, and the doors were closed until further notice.
