Prepare your engines and race

With a women's division introduced to the racing roster and four rookies making their début, it was truly an evening of new beginnings.

Oval Track enthusiasts were treated to a spectacular night of racing on Saturday evening.

With a women’s division introduced to the racing roster and four rookies making their début, it was truly an evening of new beginnings.

“We had 36 local racers participate in the event and the club is growing,” said Boet Buys, one of the event organisers.

Thankful that the club was expanding, Mr Buys encouraged other racing lovers to join the Oval Track fold and enjoy the fast paced experience of racing. “It is a safe sport where you get to learn a lot,” he said.

On a more serious note, Mr Buys said Saturday’s event was dedicated to Antonie van den Berg, a youngster who recently passed away. “His father used to race for us and this is a small way of showing our condolences.”

In the rookies division, Tiaan Buys sped into first place, followed by Stephan van der Merwe in second position and Nathan Anderson in third.

Nathan’s placing of third place was met with celebration, as it was not only his first race, but he was also the youngest driver at just nine years of age.

Boet Buys clinched first place in the Tin Tops division, with Flip Gericke in second position and Tiaan Buys in third place.

Koos van der Merwe sped into first place in the Two-Litre category, Pieter Bester Snr clinched second place and Henk van Rooyen took third place.

In the Hot Rods division, Koos van der Merwe continued his winning streak and managed to secure first place again. He was followed by Craig Lindique in second place and Dewald Botha in third place.

In the women’s division, Zaakira Khan sped into first place, followed by Rheasha Jamalodeen in second place and Nadia van der Merwe in third place.

JP Bruin took first place in the 1600 division, Antonie van der Merwe secured second place and Showkat Khan sped into third place.

Roux van der Colff secured first place in 1600 category, with Pieter Bester Jnr in second place and Colin Zietsman in third place.

The next racing event will take place on April 25.
