Signal Hill cross shines its light

A small group of Newcastillians have helped the Christian symbol atop Signal Hill shine again.

On Saturday afternoon, the fluorescent tubes of the pylon-mounted cross were replaced for R547, and by nightfall the cross was lit up.

Those involved with the cross’s refurbishment said it was a true team effort.

Resident and businessman, Jude Theophilus began the process on the Newcastle Classifieds Facebook page some weeks ago, initially requesting the municipality assist.

However, fellow businessman, Johan Pieters believed it was a community responsibility.

After an article appeared in local media explaining what had to be done and what was required to continue, Mr Pieters said local electrician, Gerard Koorts offered his services, while Michelle Oosthuizen (Eazi Access Group NKZN) sponsored a cherry-picker and labour for the project.

“We came together this morning,” Mr Pieters said on Saturday in the shade of the tower upon which the cross is mounted. “The cross has been fixed in time for Easter; there is a new cross for Newcastle.”

No one was paid for the repair of the cross.

The team thanked all who had pledged their services or contributions toward the revival of the cross, stating it would not have been possible for one person alone.

In future, the aim is to replace standard tubes with LED lights, for a brighter beacon.
