Drought shocker: Spioenkop Dam, then and now!

A photograph taken in April and 1 taken this month shows how bad the drought really is

These two photographs, taken eight months apart, show how bad the drought facing Northern KZN really is. Although Water Affairs officials are not worried about the water level in Spioenkop Dam, as they can open dams upstream to fill the dam if needed, other dams in the area (such as Oliphantskop Dam in Indaka) have no such emergency reserve dams upstream.

20,000 people go without water, daily, other than what is being supplied by tanker.

Currently, close to 50% of the water coming from the Ezakheni water treatment works is being transported to Indaka by tanker. This has caused parts of the high-lying areas fed by the Ezakheni plant to be suffering from low water pressure and in some cases, a total lack of water.
