Walking and running the extra mile at the 2015 Mortimer Toyota Battlefields Marathon

Athletes could choose between a 10km, 21.1km, and a 42.2km – all races were out and back into the mountains on the D96.

The team of Mortimer Toyota Newcastle under the leadership of dealer principal, Rowan Bernstein proved they could walk and run the extra mile for our athletes.

As the main sponsor of the annual Mortimer Toyota-Battlefields 4-in-1 road race on Saturday, March 7, team Toyota also hosted a water table to provide runners and walkers with much needed sustenance.

The cool weather seemed to favour the nearly 300 participating athletes and was perfect, especially for the longer races.

Athletes could choose between a 10km, 21.1km, and a 42.2km – all races were out and back into the mountains on the D96.

Not even the falling rain could dampen the spirit of the runners when they set off at 6am.

The scenic route provided much needed distraction from the long and taxing kilometres.

Many runners ran the marathon in the hope to qualify for the 90th Comrades Marathon later this year, as this was the last qualifying race.

The Newcastle Harriers thanked all parties involved in making this an enjoyable and successful event.

A special thanks was given to the Newcastle Advertiser team for their huge support in ensuring the event ran smoothly.
