Police clamp down on robberies

In the final incident, a woman fell victim to a scam, which resulted in her being robbed of R10 000.

Five robberies were reported in the past week.

The first incident occurred in oSizweni, when a 13-year-old was robbed of R10 and a cellphone. Police arrested the suspect, after the child’s mother identified him.

 

The second incident, also in oSizweni, a child was robbed of his cellphone while on his way to school.

Fortunately, six pupils who were passing by, noticed the robbery and chased the two robbers. After a scuffle, the men were apprehended and a pistol was recovered.

Captain Shooz Magudulela, police spokesperson, said one of the boys sustained a minor injury during the alteration with the suspects.

Once in custody, it was discovered one of the suspects was wanted for murder.

Both men were charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm, assault with intent of grievous bodily harm and armed robbery.

Although the youngsters were commended for their bravery by Captain Magudulela, children were warned against confronting robbers in dangerous situations.

 

A further two people were robbed of R16 000 in two separate incidents in the Farmers Hall area.

In the final incident, a woman fell victim to a scam, which resulted in her being robbed of R10 000.

She was allegedly approached by someone who offered to share cash with her that had allegedly been found in the street.

“She was offered juice, drank it and ended up feeling dizzy. She was then put into a car and robbed of all her cash,” Captain Magudulela said.

Further investigations continue.

Captain Magudulela urged the community to be more vigilant.

“Always be accompanied by somebody when going to withdraw cash. Never be attracted by any cash seen on the ground. Remember, you also have cash with you and fake cash is always used to scam you.”
