The new Pro 10 competition initiated by Bowls South Africa last year attracted 14 entries this time round at Newcastle Bowling Club.

This format of Pairs allows each player only to play with two bowls and the closest four bowls count on a reduced count from four to one.

Teams can be mixed and each club submits their two winners to play in the District playoffs, with the winner and runner up of the District then going to the National Pro 10 competition, which will be held at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg later this year.

The 14 teams were divided into two sections and all teams played each other within their sections. The top three teams in each section were as follows:

Section one: Andy Crosbie and Bert Rodgers (335 points), Douglas Steele and Anil Durgadin (321) and Dorothy Crosbie and Michelle Steele (310).

Section two: Mike Martens & Colin Broderick (363), Sid price and Lou Roux (321) and Ron and Alice Howe (311).

Andy and Bert (for the second consecutive year) and Mike and Colin thus go through to represent Newcastle BC.

Trials for the KZNCB u/19 and u/25 teams were held at Newcastle Bowling Club recently.

More than 20 youngsters from throughout the District travelled to participate in the trials and Newcastle Bowling Club is proud of the following members who were selected: u/19: Dylan van der Merwe and Aspen Shaw (only 11 years old!). u/25: Lindsay McArthur and David Apperly (reserve).

They travel to Bloemfontein to participate in the South Africa Inter districts age group competition. This ‘nursery’ will no doubt be looking after bowls for the immediate future.
