Policewomen carry out Operation Basadi

Police seized five knives and one dagga pipe containing a small amount of dagga

On August 20, an operation was conducted by women in the Ladysmith Cluster. Operation Basadi was held under the command of Ladysmith station commander Brigadier Kunene. The group of policewomen from various stations and units within the Ladysmith Cluster were supported by a smaller group of male counterparts.

The operation started with a cordon and search of five schools within the Ekuvukeni and Ladysmith area.

During the search of the schools, police seized five knives and one dagga pipe containing a small amount of dagga.

An 18-year-old scholar from one of the schools was arrested for being in possession of a dangerous weapon. He appeared in the Ekuvukeni Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

After the cordon and search operation was finalised, the officers conducted a roadblock along Helpmekaar Road to combat the transportation of illegal firearms and drugs. Ladysmith Public Safety officers were on hand and several drivers were issued with traffic violation notices.

A total of 111 vehicles and over 410 people were searched. Suspect raids were conducted throughout the same operation.

A total of 11 arrests were made for offences that included assault, domestic violence, rape, possession of drugs and contravening the Road Traffic Act.
