Kick-starting the petrolhead year

There was no rain on Saturday, but thunder boomed in the form of the racing engines of the Newcastle Oval Track.

Welcoming the new year, spectators and racers were out in full force for the first race.

The Rookies started in top gear as experienced young driver, Tiaan Buys clinched first place, followed by seven-year-old Stefan van der Merwe in seond position.

In the 1600 division, Hendrik van der Merwe absolutely demolished all other competitors, cruising to a first place victory while lapping other racers. He was followed by JP Bruin in second place and Johann de Jager in third position.

Imraan Ameer secured first place in the 1660 category after pulling a dangerous and daring overtaking maneuver on Pieter Bester, when he slipped up midway through the first heat. The fight for pole position was tough, with neither racer willing to take second place. Through excellent driving, Imraan managed to shut the door consistently on any advantage Pieter tried to press through.

After all the heats, Pieter managed to claim third place, while Imraan claimed first and Johan Buys took second.

Francois Greyvensteyn took first place in the two-litre division, with Hendrik van der Merwe in second place and Brian Jones clinching third place.

In the Hot Rod category, Hendrik Labuschagne sped into first place, Johan Buys in second place and Hendrik van der Merwe taking third position.

Boet Buys displayed his dominance in the Tin Top division by speeding into first place, while second and third place went to Flip Gericke and Wimpie Bezuidenhoudt respectively.

The next Oval Track event will take place on February 28.
