Yes, it was that time of the year again when wages in the hospitality industry increased on July 1, 2016. That means that at the end of July 2016 your wages had to reflect the increases as legislated.

Firstly, let us determine which type of company falls within the hospitality industry. Sectoral Determination 14. Hospitality Sector Section 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 clarifies which type of enterprise is classified under this legislation. The minimum wages affects every employee who works in this company being a cleaner, general worker, etc.

Hospitality sector means any commercial business or a part of that business in which employers and employees are associated with or carry out the following activities:
Providing accommodation in a hotel, motel, inn, resort, game lodge, hostel, guest house, guest farm, bed and breakfast establishments, short stay accommodation, self catering, timeshare, camps and caravan parks.

The following also falls under this legislation being restaurants, pubs, taverns, cafes, tearooms, coffee shops, fast food outlets such as a retail outlet who caters additionally with fast food being served on the premises where clients can sit and eat, snack bars, industrial or commercial caterers, and function caterers such as wedding catering companies, contract caterers that provide food or liquid refreshments.

This includes companies that have activities or operations incidental to or arising from any of the activities mentioned above.
