Help centre to make drivers more aware

An attitude of zero tolerance will again be implemented. This was proven when approximately 20 drivers were arrested for speeding on Allen Street last week, during a night operation staged by local traffic officials.

The festive season is upon us and thousands of motorists will again take to the roads to spend Christmas with their families.

Last year, road incidents claimed approximately 1 465 people nationally. In a bid to curb figures of deaths locally, Newcastle Municipality launched an awareness project, N11 Help Centre.

On December 10, traffic officials, protection services officials and Councillor Noma Kunene, Portfolio Councillor for Community Services, attended the road side campaign launch.

Officials handed out pamphlets and encouraged drivers to be vigilant, rest if fatigued and take precautionary measures when travelling long distances.

The main aim of the help centre is to create road safety awareness and promote high visibility on the N11 route by establishing a centre where motorists can report incidents.

Additionally, Protection Services’ Summer Contingency Plan regarding lightning, storms, floods and fires was outlined.

It was the first launch of the festive season and will operate on a 24-hour basis.

More help centres will be launched during December at venues yet to be determined.

Newcastle Municipality’s Public Safety Department requests all residents to be cautious and considerate when
