Tired of endless sewage problems

Especially after lunch, when the weather gets warmer, the stink is unbearable

Businessman Hendrik Johannes Robinson is fed up with the stinky situation in Alfred Street. For over two weeks now, Mr Robinson has been battling overflowing sewage right next to his business.

Two manholes on the pavement no longer have covers (after the steel was stolen), leaving deep, gaping holes just waiting for some unsuspecting person to step into. This is very dangerous, as a child could disappear down the holes and an adult could easily break a leg.

Last week, uThukela workers fixed the overflowing sewage problem, but the very next day it was back. Sewage is overflowing and causing a terrible stink.

“This is not hygienic, not to mention bad for business. I will definitely lose customers as a result,” says a furious Mr Robinson.

He adds that, especially after lunch when the weather gets warmer, the stink is unbearable.

The manhole covers were stolen a while ago and have not been replaced. Fearing that customers may inadvertently get hurt, Mr Robinson and other businessmen in the area came up with the idea of using tyres as a makeshift measure to fill the holes.

At the time of going to press, uThukela had not commented on the matter.
