St Gregory’s pre-school – a curriculum with a difference

It is very important to expose young minds to the wonderful world around them

St Gregory Primary School has spent a lot of effort to develop our pre-school curriculum. The two pre-school classes fully participate in everything the school has to offer, ranging from academics to culture and sport.

St Gregory takes pride in our learners’ academic achievements and we believe that it is in the child’s best interest to start at an earlier age to read, write and count. The grade R learners have even learnt a few phrases in French, on top of the English, Zulu and Afrikaans taught in school.

The grade R class recently completed their first group project on dinosaurs. They learnt about the different classes of dinosaurs based on eating habits and the names of a few types of dinosaurs. To round off their lessons on these pre-historic reptiles, they are practicing a play about dinosaurs.

We live in a technological era and children come into contact with smart phones, tablets and computers at a much earlier age.
The learners have computer lessons where they learn the basics of how to operate a computer in a safe environment. All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy and more so for pre-school learners!

Therefore, they also have art and baking lessons, coupled with enough time to eat something nutritious and to run and play to their heart’s delight. The classes also take turns to open with a short devotion during assembly on Fridays and the pre-school classes are no exception! These 35 youngsters have no problem getting up in front of the rest of the school and to act out the scenes they’ve practiced.

This is no small feat, considering that this means an audience of about a hundred older learners. On the sports field, our learners started with hockey this term.

They are learning basic ball skills under the watchful eye of the teachers and more than just a few future sport stars have been identified.

It is very important to expose young minds to the wonderful world around them and thus the school takes all the learners on regular excursions.

Each grade is responsible for raising the necessary funds to make this possible. The pre-school classes are always busy with an endeavour to raise money, including taking their turn for the school’s weekly cake sale.

These learners don’t just look like they are a part of St Gregory with their uniforms; they truly are a part of the school!
