5SAI army base turns 53 years old

Staff Sergeant NE Mkhulise gave an address in which he elaborated on some of the history of the unit from 1900 until today

Ladysmith’s 5SAI Battalion celebrated its 53rd birthday on April 1 at the army base.

The proceedings started with Major Zama opening the function and telling the soldiers what the purpose of the occasion was. Major Zama also used the opportunity to wish the soldiers a safe and happy Easter.

Staff Sergeant NE Mkhulise then gave an address in which he elaborated on some of the history of the unit from 1900 until today. He spoke at length about the Siege of Ladysmith in 1900 and the battles of Colenso, Platrand and Spioenkop. He carried on to tell of how the unit was deployed to South West Africa in 1976, and in 1989 to Durban and Tugela Ferry with the first female platoon.

The day was filled with sporting activities, as well as fun games for all to enjoy.

A social braai and the cutting of the cake ended off a most enjoyable day.
