Newcastle’s very own book exchange club takes off

Taking the first step in creating the club, they met with girls from their power circle at St Dominic's last Tuesday.

Determined to recreate a passion for reading, Haseena and Shameena Patel have set their book exchange club in motion.

Taking the first step in creating the club, they met with girls from their power circle at St Dominic’s last Tuesday.

A power circle forms part of the Leave No Girl Behind International (LNGBI) movement, where girls form a support system to ensure they get the same opportunities as their male counterparts.

“The girls from the power circle have joined the club as part of their pledge for LNGBI,” Haseena said.

The club has been dubbed Leave No Girl Behind International Newcastle Book Exchange.

Despite its name, the book club is open to all ages and genders.

With a handful of books already in the club’s possession, it is slowly opening the door to a world of wonder and adventures only books can offer.

Books can be swopped at no cost, and as Haseena explained, the books are essentially the person’s property until they are ready to exchange it for another.

Haseena and Shameema still require premises, shelves and more books to ensure the club’s success. If anyone would like to assist, they can contact Shameema on 072 271 4040 or 034 317 2151.
