Dad’s cycling for charity

Altogether 25 cyclists participated in the challenge this year, and contrary to the title not all cyclists are male or even dads.

Cycling 668 kilometres is no ordinary ordeal, but doing so in the name of charity is something else altogether.

The Dad’s Cycle Challenge has avid cyclists from all walks of life lending their love of cycling to a noble cause.

The cyclists trace a route from Johannesburg to Durban, passing through Standerton, Newcastle, Ladysmith and Pietermaritzburg, covering a whopping 668 kilometres.

Founded by Rob Jackson, Wayne Baker, Garth Wilkinson and Troy Barwell, the Dad’s Cycle Challenge celebrated its 10th anniversary this year on October 8.  “I think our strength lies in our consistency. This year we hope to reach a target of R 350 000,” said Mr Jackson.

Each cyclist pays his own way and is required to raise a minimum of R 10 000 for charity.

The cyclists receive red-carpet treatment all along the route from receiving aid from traffic officials to being escorted by ER24 in case of an emergency.

Altogether 25 cyclists participated in the challenge this year, and contrary to the title not all cyclists are male or even dads.

This year three females, two of whom are mums, joined the men in what turned out to be an awesome adventure.
