It seems the youth of Newcastle have immense talent in cricket, after St Dominic’s Academy challenged Uelzen Primary of Dundee to a 20 over game on Monday.

The young stars of St Dominic’s under 13 cricket side had their opponents on the back-foot for most of the game.

Uelzen Primary’s batsmen took to the crease first, and managed strong 106 runs before retiring after being bowled all out.

Their batting performance was admirable but they broke under the onslaught of excellent pace and spin bowling from St Dominic’s bowlers.

Bowlers, Kandai Govere and Mohammed Cassim put on an excellent showing with the ball, with both bowlers taking two wickets each, and Mohammed also managed an excellent run-out during the dying stages of the game.

With a total of 107 runs to win, the St Dominic’s boys went in to bat with a strong will.

Unfortunately opening batsmen Kandai was unlucky to get caught on the hand by a bouncer, and subsequently lost his wicket, as the ball passed on, into the waiting gloves of the wicket-keeper.

Mohammed followed in at number three, but he too fell under the impressive swing bowling, by getting caught with his Leg Before the Wicket.

The task of making the 107 target was seemingly slipping, but between opening batsmen Jadon Malherbe and number four batsmen Kyle Crous, the St Dominic’s team made excellent progress forward.

Young Jadon put fought an epic innings and managed to claim his half-century during the course of the game, and eventually finished up on a total of 57 runs.

Eventually the St Dominic’s boys ended the game in style, by sending the last ball across the boundary for four runs, finishing up on a total of 110-two after 14 overs.

“Uelzen had some good batting, and some good bowlers, but their fielding, and inconsistency in the bowling let them down. We have an excellent team with lots of potential. Many of our players are playing above their age group and some have only just started playing,” said an ecstatic St Dominic’s Academy Coach, Johan Jacobs.
