Wrestling ‘genius’ to represent SA

For the past seven years Eric has committed himself to his training, and next month he will participate nationally in Pretoria

Although quite shy at first, young wrestler Eric de Wet is a mountain of strength and confidence on the mats of the wrestling arena.

Coming from a family of wrestlers, it would seem that wrestling is in the blood, its necessary techniques coded into his DNA.

His father began wrestling at the age of four, and similarly Eric began at the age of seven.

For the past seven years Eric has committed himself to his training, and next month he will participate nationally in Pretoria. In November he will be travelling to Germany for 12 days to represent South Africa in four tournaments.

“I’m extremely excited about going. This is just the start though; one day I hope to represent South Africa at the Olympics,” said the jubilant Eric.

When asked what his favourite aspects about the sport were, he answered, “It teaches a person discipline and to have good manners, because of the way the sport is played.”

He advised interested parties who have yet to experience the sport, and have doubts in the sport, to pay a visit to the club to see how amazing the sport can be.

Having currently completed six levels of the nine level courses associated with the sport, Eric is what many people deem to be a ‘genius’ of the sport.

“We are extremely proud of him, and this is an excellent opportunity for him to grow and show the world what he can do. Most young wrestlers only get this opportunity at the age of 17!” said his proud mother Lizzie.

Eric will be one of 40 young atheletes who will be travelling to Germany for the tournament, and is an excellent example of how sports can influence a person’s life for the better.
