Nurse, Estelle Liebenberg, said if you were a diabetic, your risk of heart disease was doubled.

“One of the leading causes of heart disease is a bad diet. This is why diabetics have to make double sure they follow a proper diet. You must not allow it to affect your diabetes, and at the same make sure your diet does not put you at risk for heart complications,” she advised.

She led the group in some exercise before explaining it would ensure a drop in blood sugar levels to minimise heart complications.

Nutritionist, Sonja van der Merwe, explained the benefits of the plate plan, and how important it was your body receive all the varieties of food groups.

“We don’t think of it as a diet but rather call it a lifestyle plan, because with a lifestyle plan, you understand just how much of an impact it makes in your life,” she said.

Heart Foundation co-founder, Satchoo Chetty said the foundation would be conducting a road show throughout Newcastle, and invited community members to join all their programmes.

“We are a free organisation with qualified personnel and no political or economic gains. We just want to help our community,” he concluded.
