Sir,
I’m a 77-year-old pensioner with hearing problems and difficulty walking. On Saturday, May 31 at about 9:15am I wanted to withdraw cash at the ATM outside Pick ‘n Pay.
Just before reaching the ATM a man came running towards me, asking whether he could please use it first as he needs more cash to pay at the till.
I stood back to help him out. After he left I put my card in and it jammed. Suddenly he came from behind and pushed my card in (or so I thought). The machine started working and then stopped. Not having a cellphone I was stuck – I mentioned it to several people (hoping somebody would help with their phone) but everybody just looked at me and walked away.
I was shocked to see how the local people were not prepared to help an old lady.
There was no security guard around at the time, but when he eventually came he said he could not help me as he had no airtime. I gave him cash to buy airtime, and he disappeared and took ages to come back.
I must say thank you to the lady who then tried to help me. After a while the money van arrived, but no card was found in the ATM. I rushed to the bank to report my card stolen, but rushing to the counter was delayed by some people standing in the line. Luckily Dalene (thank you) heard me and cancelled my card.
By that time two transactions had already been made – cash withdrawn and a purchase at a bottle store.
