No halt to water restrictions

Rain in Ladysmith itself does not necessarily mean that the restrictions will be lifted

According to uThukela’s deputy water operations manager Mr Glen Singh, there has not been sufficient improvement in the situation to warrant the lifting of water restrictions in Ladysmith.

This is due to the fact that not enough rain has fallen in the catchment area, which is Van Reenen and the Sandspruit River area. Rain is needed in these areas so that the Klip River can be flushed out and water can begin to be extracted from the river again.

Rain in Ladysmith itself does not necessarily mean that the restrictions will be lifted. The rain we are having now is good for gardens and growing vegetables, but it has little if any impact on the status of water restrictions in town.

Mr Singh says it is very unusual for rivers to be this low at this time of year. Normally in November, rivers should have a very good flow. If this problem continues, it is indeed a cause for grave concern.

So, ultimately, water restrictions are still in place and people must try their best to conserve water where they can.
