“When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.”

A familiar saying, and one that has never been more true in recent weeks. We only realise true strength when we’re forced to be strong; either for ourselves, or for someone we love.

In a  newsroom, we’re often forced to be strong for each other. Journalists go through much more behind the scenes than readers will ever know – the pressure of deadline, the elation of sniffing out a lead, the agony of ‘writer’s block’, the anticlimax of sending off a story to print, and the satisfaction of seeing your name in the paper.

Through it all, we deal with the difficulties the best way we can. This often involves copious amounts of caffeine, one too may take-aways and late nights spent chasing deadlines with varying shades of hilarity and hair-pulling.

We often don’t have time to deal with what we do. We hide behind the headlines and text, while silently contemplating the society we report on.

Yet we wake up every morning, excited to come to work. Keen to make a difference. We may be exhausted, and some of us may be turning grey…but we love what we do, and we do it well.
