Father wrestles robber during housebreaking

The father heroically managed to knock the robber out of the room

An elderly father and his 38-year-old daughter are still in shock after two armed robbers broke into their home in Agra Crescent in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The 85-year-old man and his daughter were asleep in the house at the time.

The robbers got in by breaking the kitchen window with the use of screwdrivers and wire. The kitchen was then ransacked, with all the cupboard doors being flung open as the criminals looked through everything.

One of the robbers then made his way to the daughter’s room. The thug held a gun to her head and demanded money, before going through all the cupboards and even looking under the bed for money. The daughter’s Smart-phone and laptop were next to her bed, but were not taken. The robber could find no money in the room and, being angry, demanded an iron so that he could torture information out of her. Luckily, there was no iron close by.

The second robber kept an eye on the daughter while the gunman made his way to the father’s room. He woke up feeling cold as the robber took the blankets off him. He saw a figure standing next to his bed and heard the robber tell him to be quiet or he would be shot.

The father heroically managed to knock the robber out of the room using the door. He then held the door closed from the inside with his hands and knee, with the robber’s gun-holding hand jammed in the door. A struggle ensued and a shot went off, missing the father and hitting a cupboard door.

After the gunshot, both robbers fled the house without taking anything.

The daughter immediately contacted the police and within minutes, officers were on scene. The family would like to thank the SAPS for their quick response.

The father and daughter both say that God was on their side that morning, as they were not harmed in any way and nothing was taken from their home. They are still in shock after what happened and are thankful they are still alive.

Police are investigating a case of attempted house robbery.
