Update: Girl’s body found after long search

The Ladysmith K9 Unit was informed and went out to recover the tiny body

The body of the five-year-old child who went missing in the Ekuvukeni area last Thursday has been found.

The child went missing on Thursday, October 16, while on her way home after school. It is alleged that the girl was crossing a stream when she was swept away in a flash flood.

Police officers, together with search and rescue dogs from the Ladysmith Dog (K9) Unit, began searching for the little girl the following day.
The search continued on the Monday, and local officers were joined by the Empangeni K9 Unit, Port Shepstone K9 Unit and Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit on Wednesday, October 22.

With the additional manpower, local K9 officers and dogs combed the mountainous terrain.

The search was called off on Thursday afternoon, October 23. At this stage, there was still no sign of the child’s body.

A resident stumbled upon the body yesterday (Sunday). The Ladysmith K9 Unit was then informed and went out to the scene.

Ekuvukeni police have opened an inquest docket.

The family have not yet formally identified the body.
