Alex Liu takes role of councillor

Mr Liu started his political career in 2006 as a councillor for National Democratic Convention (NADECO), but he stepped down to focus on his duties within the textile industry in Newcastle.

After a break of three years, Alex Liu is ready for his comeback to politics.

Mr Liu started his political career in 2006 as a councillor for National Democratic Convention (NADECO), but he stepped down to focus on his duties within the textile industry in Newcastle.

In April this year, Mr Liu re-entered the political arena and was elected as a councillor and treasurer of Federal Congress (FEDCON)

“I am very grateful for the support from the executive committee so I can fulfil my duties as a councillor and to voice relevant concerns,” said Cllr Liu.

Although FEDCON was one of the smaller parties, Cllr Liu believed it had a lot of potential.

“We just have to be faithful to our supporters and carry out our leadership in such a way that we can improve both the community and service delivery,” he said.

Through his background in the business sector, Cllr Liu hoped to make a positive contribution to economic development.

“I would like to see more support given to small and medium businesses and entrepreneurs beginning for the first time,” said Cllr Liu.

As councillor and represtative of FEDCON, Cllr Liu wanted to hold the municipality accountable for service delivery and public fund expenditure.

“The next elections are in 2016, which means I will have to do my best within the next two terms to bring about some change,” Cllr Liu said.

While set on making positive changes, Cllr Liu said he and FEDCON did not want to criticise anyone, as it would not help resolve any issues.

“Instead of criticising, we will rather assist in bringing solutions to the challenges faced,” he explained.

During his term as councillor, Cllr Liu would like to bring about a balance between FEDCON, ratepayers and indigent residents, while improving the manufacturing sector.

“The unemployment rate is alarming and as a politician, you need to look at creating a balance and creating a platform for the people, create businesses and eliminate poverty,” he concluded.
