Cavanagh Marathon takes off this Sunday

It is a scenic route, which passes through Cosmos country and includes the panoramic sweep of the adjoining game reserve

Taking place on Sunday, May 10 from Wagendrift Dam, just outside Estcourt, the Cavanagh 52km Ultra Marathon, although a physically demanding race, allows runners an excellent opportunity to take in the awe inspiring beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains, the infamous Poort and the ‘Nine Hills’.

There is also a popular 21.1km trail run and a social 10 kilometre run and walk to view the dam wall. The race follows a circular route around the Wagendrift Dam, beginning and ending at the Bushman’s Boating Club.

It is a scenic route, which passes through Cosmos country and includes the panoramic sweep of the adjoining game reserve. This is a race off the beaten track and is a very welcome change from the normal tarred road running marathon.

It is a long standing fixture on the KwaZulu-Natal race calendar and is named after Tony Cavanagh who in 1972 was the main instigator of a difficult training run in the district! For all race enquiries contact Bunn Hamman on (cell) 073 589 4039.

The race is run by the Estcourt Athletic Club, which was established in 1972. It has been a significant part of the running culture of Estcourt and over the years many runners and walkers, old and new have made new friends, motivated one another through the toughest of races and supported one another as friends on and off the road. EAC caters for all runners, walkers and cyclists, whether you join as a single member or bring along the whole family you will be welcomed among friends!
