Chaos reigns in Newcastle

Structural damage may be likely if the wind continues to pick up.

While veld fires wreak havoc in and around Newcastle, the wind has picked up considerably, with no less than two trees already blown over.

South African Weather services reported the wind speed in Newcastle at 25 knots, which is considered as a moderate gale, which bodes ill with the multiple fires reported in the area.

Wind speeds related to trees being blown down, are usually in the region of 41 to 55 knots. These are considered strong gales or storm whole gales.

Structural damage may be likely if the wind continues to pick up and residents are urged to drive only if necessary.

Sandstorms are also being reported, reducing visibility. Motorists in town are urged to drive carefully.

A warning issued by the South African weather services also states the danger time for veld fires will only pass at approximately 8 pm tonight.
