Factories narrowly escape fiery blaze

On-scene fire fighters said the industries in the area had been fortunate the main fire engine had been sent out to address the matter.

A raging veld fire threatened to engulf three textile factories just after midday today.

A family member of one of the owners of Fuzziwear, Carol van Wyngaard explained how she had caught a whiff of the smoke, and rushed outside to spot the approaching flames.

“People had reported the fire was small and that they were handling it, but they weren’t! It was in our yard!” she exclaimed. The fire entered the premises and set alight cut-off material, which was waiting to be picked up.

The material succumbed easily to the flames, due to its highly flammable nature.

Mrs van Wyngaard claimed this was not the first time that the factory had faced fire threats.

“There is a field behind the factory, and the people behind that don’t care about the fires that they light,” she alleged.

On-scene fire fighters said the industries in the area had been fortunate the main fire engine had been sent out to address the matter, as the first reports had only suggested a small veld fire.

One of the fire fighters suggested that Fuzziwear had been extremely lucky, due to the flammable nature of the cut-off materials so close to the factory.

Firefighters advised businessmen to keep flammable objects in safe areas, especially during the fire season.
