For the fourth day in a row, protesters have blocked streets in and out of Steadville. Those not blocked by protesters are blocked by a heavy police presence.
Emergency services in Steadville have been hampered, with residents forced to walk everywhere. Ambulances that have entered have been stoned.
What was a protest against a taxi tariff increase has turned into a battle to establish Steadville’s own taxi association.
Attempts to do so have been rejected by the Klipriver Taxi Association, who represent the entire region.
Traffic was chaotic last night, with drivers battling to navigate the Newcastle road between town, Modelkloof, Limit Hill and Ezakheni. Some spent over an hour in heavily congested traffic to make it literally two kilometres.
