Weenen Primêr going the extra mile

The turnout was really good and the day was a major success despite not having electricity or water

All focus was on Weenen Primêr this past week. What with music, arts, swimming, fun games and treats. On February 7, the Rhino Art Project came to judge the rhino art, Weenen Primêr being one of three schools taking part. Although the surprise guest – Kingsley Holgate – well known celebrity adventurer, was unable to make it, they were treated to the talented music band ‘Qadasi and Macinga’ with their colourful foot tapping music – ‘Old Maskandi’.

Learners were encouraged to show off their traditional dancing. The children presented Project Rhino with their ‘Rhino Art’, which was judged by two members of the Rhino Art team. First prize was a beautiful bicycle which was won by Owethu Langa in grade five. Second prize was a school bag that was won by Lindelwa Phungula, a grade six learner.

The winners from each class also received certificates. A most entertaining soccer match was held afterwards between the senior grades.
Later some teachers and game rangers joined in the fun, with Richard as the commentator, dressed in his traditional clothing. Thami Dladla very ably assisted him in the commentating. Man of the match was Zuzokuhle Mnguni in grade six – he won himself a bright red bicycle.

They ended the day with more singing and dancing. More fun was had with Kudu and Eland, the school teams swimming, at the inter house gala at Weenen Primêr on Friday. Team Kudu produced strong competition against team Eland. Samkelo Khumalo from Kudu won Victor Ludorum and Nondumiso Maseko also from Kudu won Victrix Ludorum.

Eland walked away as winners but Kudu won the spirit trophy. The children were entertained by Ms Field and Mrs Dreyer- team teachers – as they jumped fully clothed into the pool in a fun dare and celebration. The following day on February 21 was Weenen Primêr ‘Fun Games’ morning and the ‘Tea Garden’ that is held every term.

After a light thunder shower the previous evening we were blessed with sunshine and smiles. The turnout was really good and the day was a major success despite not having electricity or water. It just goes to show that Weenen Primêr can rise above these challenges. Where else can you go to enjoy such a pleasant atmosphere without costing you an arm and a leg?
