Volksrust Bowling Club hosted a Fours competition recently to commemorate its 25th anniversary.

Teams from across KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Mpumalanga spent an enjoyable day on the greens, and the Newcastle team of Tim & Kim Taylor and Frans & Joan Schoon was declared worthy winners.

This weekend, provincial bowlers will converge on Empangeni.

Northerns zone will hope to wrest the title from defending champions, Midlands, in the annual inter-zone competition, which brings together these two zones and Zululand.

Newcastle Bowling Club congratutales Dundee’s Nan Roos.

Mrs Roos reached the finals of the South African Singles Championships played in Johannesburg last weekend, defeating many high profile bowlers in an impressive run of form.

She was unfortunate to go down after an excellent tussle in this competition.

Bowlers from the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowling district fared generally well at the Nationals this year – playing in Cape Town, Hogart Gevers of Vryheid won his section in the singles competition, while Richards Bay’s Barry Mutlow won the senior singles division.

Piet Retief’s Braam van Zyl and Brendon van Vreden did equally well in the men’s pairs section.

In the women’s fours section of play, Nan Roos Sylvia Malan, Hanna Gevers and Noela Dreyer were victorious, while Sylvia and Noela won the pairs section.

Vryheid member, Barbara Rickard also did well to reach the quarter-final stages.

Newcastle Bowling Club extends a sad but fond farewell to Tim Johnston, who will be relocating to Ireland on Friday.

Tim has been a loyal member of Newcastle Bowling Club for several years, and his presence on the green and at the counter will be missed by all.
