Strong winds do more damage

Roof blown off temple and electricity out in St Augustine Drive

The strong winds have caused more damage than initially reported.

The roof of the Sri Prabhu Hanuman Mandhir Temple in Rose Terrace was blown off this afternoon. Temple-goers arrived for a service only to be greeted with the sight of the roof no longer on the building but instead scattered across the lawn and over the road. Devotees gathered together and started to fix the roof.

In St Augustine Drive, a tree was blown over into the road and damaged electricity lines. Residents claim there were some sparks and a few small flames when the tree smashed against and pulled down the power cables. The electricity has since been out in the area and residents are waiting for someone to cut the tree away so that the cables may be repaired.

The heavy winds also wreaked havoc when they caused roofs to fly off  and brought down power cables in Steadville. Powerful winds have caused extensive damage to other areas as well. Wind speeds in Van Reenen have been recorded as over 100km per hour.

There have also been many veld fires spreading quickly due to the wind.
