The way we remember Father’s Day

Till today, I used to think of it as the most 'bleh' day of them all

Okay, the day has arrived, which most men dread, right? – Father’s Day. The usual round of casual gifts are exchanged – the socks, ties, aftershave and homemade cards – but mostly, it is a day us fathers would want to forget.

Let’s face it, it has none of the hype of Valentine’s Day or that ‘girly competitor’ Mother’s Day…

Till today, I used to think of it as the most ‘bleh’ day of them all.

Today, my children reminded me again why it is so special. This year, they deemed that I was ‘too old’ for the homemade cards, so it was just the ‘normal’ breakfast in bed and aftershave.

As I sat on the bed, munching on my half-cold breakfast and sipping my lukewarm coffee, I thought back to the first card they so proudly brought me many moons ago. It had none of the flair of a hallmark card; crayons were used and poorly-spelt words exalting my prowess as the ‘greatesr’ dad of them all’ was all they had written.

Fathers get older, I guess, but we never stop thinking of our young ones as little angels. Sadly, they grow up and we go from the ‘world’s greatest’ to the ‘aftershave guy’ in a heartbeat.

So, to all you dads out there getting your first hand-drawn card, I have this to say: Cherish it, because before you know it, it will be gone.
