‘Skaapdag’ played in perfect golfing conditions

The Scorpions arrived with a huge sting in their tail to totally dominate in their four matches against Boardman’s Nationals

The ‘Gee Jays’ make a welcome return to the Ladysmith Country Club on Friday, May 30, with their show ‘Snippets’. This popular group is sure to provide the best of entertainment with their superb renditions of some of their most popular acts. Grant, Gary and John are well-known to Ladysmith audiences and have performed some really great shows in the past, so we all look forward to another evening of fun, laughter and superb entertainment. Tickets are available from the office and bar at the Country Club (phone 036-637-3521). There will be a ‘barnyard’ style for catering, which means you bring your own supper. At this stage, the tickets are selling well, so please make sure you are not disappointed at the very last minute.

The ‘Skaapdag’, sponsored by FNB Insurance Brokers, was played in perfect golfing conditions on Wednesday afternoon and the winner was Segi Pillay, with Rob Salmond in second place on a count-out from Chris Nel. The fourth round of the Mortimer Toyota League was played on Saturday afternoon, with a 12.30pm shotgun start. The Scorpions arrived with a huge sting in their tail to totally dominate in their four matches against Boardman’s Nationals and record a full-house eight points to leap-frog a few other teams and be placed in third spot overall.

Three teams – namely 4 Must Get Beers, Team Golf and Fat Bastards – managed six points, which now places 4 Must Get Beers in the lead with 29 points, Team Golf in second spot with 26 points and Scorpions in third spot with 25 points. Five more rounds remain to be played before the positions are decided for the finals, so there is still plenty of time for a few upsets or great results. The fifth round will be played on Sunday, June 8, with a ‘draw’ for all teams teeing off from No. 1. Thanks to Mortimer Toyota for their continued support and sponsorship of this very popular league event.

The Bowls Championships are progressing well and a few matches are scheduled for this week. The ladies’ singles have reached the finals stage, with Barbara Elworthy to play Ann Cerrai. The men’s singles, mixed pairs, and men’s and ladies’ pairs are progressing well and the results will be posted later.
This weekend’s fixtures are: Hamilton Preparatory School Day on Saturday, to be played as a Four-Ball Alliance with two scores to count and a ‘scramble drive’. On Sunday, the return match of the Ladysmith vs Harrismith Challenge takes place at home, with the Ladysmith golfers trying very hard to bring back the trophy they relinquished to their opponents from ‘over the hill’ a few months ago.
On Monday, May 26, six of our past captains will be travelling to the Royal Durban Golf Club to take part in the Golf Captains Society of KZN Gerry Shuttleworth Memorial Trophy. We wish them good golfing and it would be wonderful to see the trophy in our clubhouse for this year. So, to Wayne Bentley, Wynand Wessels, Noel Hoffman, Shane Botha, Pier Turconi and Andrea Sirchia, we say “Go for it!”
The Friday evening ‘100 Club’ draw was won by Gerry Grobler, who was conspicuous by his absence, thus leaving the rest of us to be there this Friday with a chance to take home the two-grand prize.
